Elephant at Addo National Park

Elephant drinking water at Addo

We left for Africa eleven months ago but my brain refuses to let me believe that it was so long ago.  Travel days imprint themselves in my memories.

The daily grind of working, writing, cooking, and walking dogs blends into one long uninterrupted day but the discrete hours and minutes while traveling stand out like bejeweled droplets in my mind.

You know what I mean, right?

Everyone has those days . . . the first time you step across the border of another state, another country, or a place you have always wanted to go.

And, those sort of days aren't limited to travel: it's the first day you walk into your first place away from your parents or that first dance when you were so gawky and dressed in that skirt that nobody thought looked good except for you because, well, you didn't really have much of a fashion sense back then.  You know what I mean.

Dung beetle

Those days are iridescent splotches that refuse to fade to bland nothingness.

The last couple of weeks in South Africa were like that.  I've been putting off writing about them because, yes, I've been busy (and, by busy, I mean frantically checking my e-mail waiting for agents and spending my spare time obsessed with Jack of All Tribes . . . which if you have not found this game yet, you totally need to get on it.  It's way better than Farmwhatever.)

Those South African days were just about perfect.

We'd driven from Johannesburg through Kruger to Sodwana Bay (where we had dismal, cold scuba experiences), then Durban, and the beautiful haunting Wild Coast, before we reached Addo.  And, Addo surprised us.

The elephants!  Yes, elephants!  Oh, man, did we love these elephants.

Unlike Kruger, Addo is dry, dry as sandpaper scratching against newly sawn wood.

The elephants searched for and huddled around these teeny tiny puddles of water because there wasn't anything bigger at Addo.

Lion at Addo

The lions basked in the sun, far from the nearest water source, waiting for the rain to quench their thirst.

And we, we sat in our car, guzzling down our liter bottles of water, letting their sedate faces stamp our memories.

South Africa by itself is so beautiful..we drove a couple of days an hour or two each way to Kruger.. was initially apprehensive that these long trips would eat into our itinerary..but then on reaching SA, we realized the landscape is so pretty, the journey itself was a source of joy.. where-else can u find road signs which shows hippo crossing, deer crossing... we had this v popular Pepsi ad in India which said "yeh dil maangey more" meaning this heart asks for more....I think it effectively sums up my feelings for my recent holiday at SA.. yeh dil maangey more !!!!!!!!
P.S. your pics are so beautiful..we tried capturing butt shots on lines of your album ..not as good, but we enjoyed the experience... it also inspired us to click pics on lines of "why did the chicken cross the road" ..this was more successful and was loads of fun...

Shilpi, I'm so glad that y'all had a wonderful time in Kruger. You're right: half the fun is just the driving itself and seeing the beautiful scenery. It's amazing to drive along and suddenly find a giraffe, elephant, or lion peeking out of the bushes.

Addo was one of the highlights of Africa for us. We only went there as a friend of mine is a game ranger there and convinced us that it was worth it. So glad we listened. It was truly amazing and we saw so many elephants.

Agreed! It was a surprise to us because, of course, everyone talks about Kruger but we found Addo to be equally wonderful (but in a slightly different way).

Oh, do I ever know what you mean. We've been back about 6 weeks now and other than a couple of highlights (seeing everyone again, eating at old favorites, and a concert or two), the rest of it is one big blob of time. When people ask the favorite country question, South Africa is usually the strongest contender. Those days, those moments, are anything but a blob. (Gorgeous pictures by the way).

Thanks Amy! For some reason, our minds go into high gear when we are traveling, documenting everything so days like those in South Africa stand out so strongly. I won't say that SA was our favorite but it definitely was an amazing country and a place we want to visit again.

Christy, We can't take any credit for those photos - the cuteness was all from the baby elephants! :)
