San Gimignano

Views from the San Gimignano Tower

San Gimignano is our favorite tourist town in Tuscany, partly because it doesn't get overwhelmed with tourists like Siena and Florence, partly because it is just plain old gorgeous, and partly because it houses the best gelato that we've ever tried (more on that later).  Once there were 70+ towers in this medieval built town, but now there are only fourteen of these towers standing.  Aside from the towers, there isn't much to see in San Gimignano so people tend to rush through it, walking down the main promenade and then leaving.  It's a prime location for day trippers who often find it not all that interesting, especially in comparison to Siena and Volterra.  But, if you take the time to explore San Gimignano, I think you'll see why we find it so charming.

I absolutely loved San Gimignano. Like most people I only visited for the day, but I wanted to stay longer. I think I could wander the streets for days.
And yes, they have the world's best gelato!

Rich culture and magnificent history! These photos can tell the whole story of San Gimignano in a glace. Great photography!

Thank you so much Greg!

Unfortunately, I only got to see San Gimignano for about 30 minutes at the tail end of a day-long trip off a cruise ship. So sad. But definitely somewhere I'd love to explore all the alleyways and views. I can't believe people actually LIVE there. What a life!

Ooooooooooh, I loved San Gimignano when I did a driving holiday around Tuscany. The cobbled streets are gorgeous, the stone walls kept us cool during those hot days, and I found the most unusual salt and pepper mills for my London apartment, which I still have! Good memories...

There's great shopping in San Gim, too! It's such a lovely city, isn't it?

Great post. I always enjoy the chance to get off the beaten path, and it seems like San Gimignano is the place. Did you do many wine tastings while you were there?
05/23/2012 10:49
Ryan - We only did one wine tasting in the San Gimignano region of their Vernaccia wines. To be honest, it wasn't our favorite wine and we preferred the Chianti Classico and Val d'Orcia wineries.

Love these photos, and love San Gimignano! Definitely our favorite tourist town in Tuscany, too, and we visit San Gimignano every time we're in Italy. Can't wait to go back!

Dani, agreed! We didn't discover it until this time around but we are absolutely in love with the town. Can't wait to go back (especially for the gelato).

No, we didn't! I didn't even know about it --- ah, well, another restaurant to add to the list when we return to San Gimignano.

Yes, fully agree! San Gimignano was my favourite town in the Tuscany area, and unfortunately only spent the day there, but great memories!!

Ciao!! I remember you when arrived at the winery! You we're a couple with a group right?
It's a pity you didn't mention my winery also because the first photo you posted is the view of San Gimignano from my garden! 😊
Do you remember? Lunch with Vernaccia and Chianti wines!

Ciao Fausto. Yes, we came into your winery and I actually have to write a full post on all of the wines that we tasted while we were in Tuscany, yours included. Actually, our favorite part of visiting your winery was the amazing olive oil. We took a bottle home with us and ate it very slowly! I'll be sure to mention your winery once I get that post up.
